Use CasesCreating Karaoke Tracks: Beyond Simple Vocal Removal
AI stem separation enables professional karaoke track creation with better quality than the old phase-cancellation trick. Here's the full workflow.
The classic "vocal remover" trick — phase-inverting one channel of a stereo mix — was always a blunt instrument. It removed anything panned to center and left mono artifacts. AI stem separation produces a true karaoke track by separating and removing only the vocal content.
What Makes a Good Karaoke Track
A karaoke track needs:
- Complete vocal removal — not just reduction
- Preserved instrumental balance and energy
- No thinning of the stereo image
- Clean loop points if you're editing verse/chorus sections
The Stem Approach
Instead of removing vocals, we take the opposite approach: keep everything else. Extract all 4 stems from Stemify, then recombine drums + bass + other in your DAW. The resulting mix is the true instrumental backing track.
Why Recombining Beats Single Stem Export
If you just use the "other" stem, you're missing the drums and bass. If you export only the instrumental (non-vocal) stems and mix them together, you preserve the full energy and frequency content of the original song — minus only the voice.
Mixing the Recombined Stems
When you import and recombine the three non-vocal stems:
- Don't just stack them — the original mix had careful balance between these elements
- Use a reference track (the original) to guide your level matching
- Adjust the low end — sometimes the bass stem loses a little sub during extraction and needs a boost around 60–80Hz
- Check the stereo width matches the original on a correlation meter
Adding Backing Vocals and Harmonies
If the track has prominent backing vocals, the vocal stem extraction will capture them too — they'll be absent from your karaoke track. For professional karaoke use, you may want to gently add synthesized harmony guides. Most karaoke software has a chord/harmony generation feature for this.
